With the world rapidly changing through technology, teaching kids how to code has become truly essential. There are a plethora of available options to choose from for coding courses.

But learning is not just about grappling a new skill. Being driven by a genuine sense of interest is very important for a fun and engaging learning experience.

It is a common (mis)conception that coding is a boring, left-brained, dull activity, which is all logic and no creativity or fun. But there are some ways to make learning how to code a super engaging activity for young kids. One of these ways is learning coding through Scratch Games!

What is Scratch?

Scratch is a block-based visual programming language and website, developed by MIT Media Lab, that acts as an educational tool for kids aged between 8 and 16. Learners can come on the site and create projects using Scratch’s block-like interface.

Scratch Games

Creating Games is one of the most popular project-format on Scratch. It makes for a highly interactive, playful and engaging experience, with exciting options to choose from in terms of visuals, animations, characters, stories, music, and more!

Using Scratch, kids can create completely original games as well as make parodies of existing popular games such as- Super Mario, Tetris, Pacman, etc.

Apart from Scratch, there are some other ways you can turn coding into a fun learning experience. These include:

STEM Toys

There are actually toys to help kids have a little extra fun while learning coding. Most of these toys are mechanical and can be operated or “animated” when the child applies the correct code. Dash Robot, Lego Mindstorms and Botley Coding Robot are some examples of coding toys.

Preparatory Games

Coding is essentially applying certain cognitive skills into action. These skills mainly include- Problem Solving, Logical Thinking, Memorization and Math Concepts. Therefore, practicing these skills can actually directly reflect in the child’s coding abilities. One can play fun games and puzzles that improve these skills, for example- solving the rubik’s cube, playing matching games, playingchess, solving sudoku, etc.

Coding apps and games

There are dozens of exciting apps easily available online for learning to code in a fun way. Download an exciting coding app or game such as Tynker, Kodable, Lightbot, mBlock, and quickly and easily grasp basic programming concepts while having fun.

Participate in Bootcamps and Competitions

If you are already a little familiar with the basics of coding, then start immersing in online and offline coding bootcamps and competitions. This will allow you to find a community of other young folks interested in coding. Other cool features of bootcamps and competitions that make them an interesting platform for learning coding are- team-based learning, a healthy competitive spirit, fun and offbeat projects, and exciting prizes incentivizing us to put our best foot-forward!
