Impact of Latest Technologies like AI, AR/VR on Education Sector

Exponential Technologies are changing the world in a big way. From driving cars to driverless cars, leisure trips to Switzerland to possibly flying to Mars, the world is changing at a phenomenal rate.

1. Artificial Intelligence for measuring focus

Chinese schools are experimenting with AI based headbands that are supposed to measure the level of concentration of each student. Through the data presented by the device, teachers can measure the engagement levels of all students, and thereby individualize instruction by bringing variation into their instruction style to reach an optimum attention level for each student.

2. Robot instructors

Professor Jürgen Handke is known to be a pioneer in digital teaching methods in Germany. Professor Handke has an unusual teaching assistant, a robot named Yuki. Yuki makes note of each student’s academic performance and the kind of support each student needs to improve their performance. Yuki also tests the students, making sure everyone remains engaged. Yuki may just be the first of many more robot instructors yet to come into existence. They bring an unexplored potential to how teaching and learning might look like in the times yet to come.

3. Virtual & Augmented Reality for an immersive learning experience

VR and AR are excellent for making learning fun and interactive. VR and AR are also great as they can provide a life-like demo and practice of skills. For example, Thakur School of Aviation Technology, Mumbai, uses VR to teach students how to fly planes by giving them a “virtually real” (or really virtual!) hands-on learning experience. Similarly AR can also be used to help the students simplify and visualize complex subjects. Apps such as Elements 4D and Anatomy 4D use AR to give a life-like visual depiction of the subjects- Chemistry and Anatomy, and make their fundamental understanding crystal clear.

4. Adding life-like dimensions to students’ projects with 3D printing

3D printing is a new cutting edge technology that is accessible, affordable and easy to grasp for students. 3D printing can especially be used by students to create projects that spark imagination, as well as utilize tech skills, thereby giving kids basic tech literacy. Why create a drawing of a dinosaur when you can create a life-like model? Also, once a child learn the fundamentals of 3D printing, who knows what they could be printing next! A piece of furniture? A whole house? Who knows!? But it is worth trying to find out.
